Bouncing Around Beirut with a Baby

The weather has been fantastic, we've got a newborn, plus we live in one of the most interesting cities in the world. So why not spend a few weekends exploring our daughter's home town?

We had a relaxing Saturday strolling along the "new" Corniche. It's a former landfill that juts out from the heart of town being developed by the public/private venture known as Solidere. They still have a long way to go; there are few buildings finished in what is now a giant mud pit. However, the walkway that follows the Mediterranean is lovely spot to get great views.

On Sunday, we entertained ourselves as spectators for the Beirut Marathon. This is one of the most positive, upbeat annual events in the city, complete with bands, guys on stilts, Ethiopian runners, and thousands of participants in the 10K.

Every year a crowd of enthusiastic Ethiopian women wave their national flags, chant, and cheer at the finished line. These women are most likely here working as domestic house keepers.

Teams of all ages enter the 10K to raise money for charities, everything from cancer awareness to child labor. It's refreshing to see such a big event that is not politicized.
